To All The Boys
In To All The Boys, Lara Jean Covey, a shy and insecure 16-year-old with an addiction to romance novels, finds herself pretending to date Peter Kavinsky, her younger sister’s ex-boyfriend, in order to make him jealous. She knows she’s in danger, but she also believes that with her letter-writing skills, she can convince him to stay away from her sister.
This YA rom-com, adapted from Jenny Han’s novel of the same name, was a surprise hit when it debuted on Netflix in 2018. It wasn’t just another paint-by-numbers adaptation – it was a charming and heartfelt story that captured audiences of all ages and ethnicities. It was unapologetically tropey, but that’s what made it so appealing. And, it was a delightfully wholesome movie that taught us the importance of family, love and sisterhood.
After Peter and Lara Jean reunited in P.S. I Still Love You, it seemed that the To All The Boys franchise was over, but Netflix surprised fans with a spinoff series starring Kitty Song Covey, Lara Jean’s pesky and insightful little sibling. The 10-episode XO, Kitty follows Kitty as she moves halfway across the world to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend. She soon learns that relationships are much more complicated than she thought. The first trailer for the show dropped on May 18, and it features a slew of familiar faces like Anna Cathcart, Ross Butler, Madeleine Arthur, Emilija Baranac and Sarayu Blue.
12 Scars
The crime drama 12 Scars is a new series that will be available on Netflix soon. The eight-episode series has been commissioned by the streaming service and is being produced by Aggregate Films, 6th and Idaho, and Legendary Television. The show has been likened to Ozark due to its similar plot, as it follows a family that engages in money laundering. However, this time it’s about Samuel Hayley, a single father who is entangled in the criminal world. He relocates to Massachusetts for a new start, but finds that his past follows him wherever he goes.
There has been no official teaser or trailer released for the series, and it is unclear when one might be made. The filming was expected to wrap up in October, but there has been no update since then. It wouldn’t be shocking if the show doesn’t end up airing this year, although the earliest it can come out is 2024.
It has been reported that Jamie Linden, who directed the movie 10 Years, is serving as the showrunner for 12 Scars. He will also be an executive producer. Legendary Television has collaborated with Netflix on several projects in the past, including Lost in Space and Halston. The company also has a number of other upcoming projects, including the Tomb Raider reboot. It’s clear that the series will be worth watching. It will explore issues such as societal corruption, friendship, and family bonds, which will make it relatable to viewers.
American Primeval
Taylor Kitsch and Peter Berg team up again on American Primeval, a limited series that will be released by Netflix. The two previously worked together on the upcoming series Painkiller. The show will be written and executive produced by Mark L. Smith, who will also direct some of the episodes. The project will be the first for Berg under his first-look deal with Netflix via Film 44, and is the second overall series he has signed up to work on with the streaming service.
It has been described as a raw and daring examination of the Western world in its earliest days, as people fight to claim control of a new globe they feel is their destiny. A number of different groups are competing for the land, and the battles will have deadly consequences. It will be a saga of the clash of cultures, beliefs, and individuals in a dangerous wilderness.
The cast for the series has been rounded out. Tim Olyphant has been tapped to star in the lead role. He is best known for his roles in films such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, John Carter, and Friday Night Lights. He will also be seen in the upcoming series Full Circle. He will be joined by a number of other talented actors including Shea Whigham, Betty Gilpin, Jai Courtney, Kyle Bradley Davis, Nick Hargrove, Derek Hinkey, Saura Lightfoot Leon, Preston Mota, and Shawnee Pourier. Rachel Tenner will be the show’s casting director and Armando Salas will serve as the series’ director of photography and cinematographer.
The Moon Represents My Heart
After a long fight, only Netflix won the rights to a new limited series based on the book The Moon Represents My Heart by Pim Wangtechawat. Kundali Bhagya Written Update will be executive produced by Shawn Levy (Free Guy, The Adam Project) and Josh Barry, who both worked on Stranger Things, along with Gemma Chan. 21 Laps senior vp Emily Morris, who brought the book to the streaming giant, will oversee the project for the producers alongside manager Moera Ainai.
The story centers on a British-Chinese family who can travel back in time. Their children, a son and daughter, search for their missing parents across time as they come of age. The novel will be published next spring by OneWorld Publications in the U.K., while Italian rights are being handled by Keller Editore.
Pim Wangtechawat is a Thai-Chinese writer who graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with a Masters in Creative Writing. She has written short stories, poems, and articles for numerous magazines and journals. In addition, she has performed at events in Edinburgh hosted by Shoreline of Infinity and the Scottish BAME Writers Network.
The Moon Represents My Heart will be the second film from Taiwanese-Argentine filmmaker Juan Martin Hsu, following his debut feature La Salada. It was screened out of competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Yenwei Li and Teresa Teng in the lead roles.
The Murders of Molly Southbourne
For as long as she can remember, Molly Southbourne has been watching herself die. Whenever she bleeds, another version of herself is born—identical in every way and intent on her destruction. But when her clones start murdering the people around her, she finds that she has no choice but to fight back and find a way to survive.
The first thing you should know about The Murders of Molly Southbourne is that it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s a bloody, body-based horror story that dives into psychological and physical horrors with an expert hand. It’s also a tale about identity and the need to feel your own existence in order to survive.
Molly Southbourne is shackled in her basement when she’s introduced to us by the person who has her shackled there. Despite the fact that she can only communicate with this person through sign language, she does her best to share her entire life story with her captive audience.
Survival reaches deep into the heart of existence, dragging our fears into the sunlight and refusing to let go until it’s had its final say. It’s a brutal, tense piece of work that will leave you wanting more from the author. Luckily, Complete Fiction has a few other things in the works for you. They’ve optioned a sci-fi horror trilogy from writer Tade Thompson and an historical fantasy series inspired by Islamic folklore from S.A. Chakraborty.
The Night Jar
Deborah Hewitt’s debut opens with a brutal and bloody prologue, and continues to thrill with a series of twists that keep the story fresh. It follows Alice Wyndham, a woman who works in a dead-end office job who suddenly wakes up to find she’s been transported into an alternate version of London called the Rookery. Here she encounters nightjars (birds that embody people’s souls), a cult with a death-obsessed leader, and the man Crowley, who insists on rescuing her from impending doom.
The Night Jar is a fun read and Hewitt has clearly had a blast creating this alternative universe. But while the premise is exciting, it doesn’t quite live up to its promises. Alice’s character makes bad decisions at every turn, and her romance with Crowley is disappointing because it never feels genuine. Hopefully, Hewitt will give some of these characters and this intriguing world another chance in a sequel.
